"I work with a small family-owned textile factory in India that I have been with for more than 14 years. When I first got started there, I did hand-painted bedding. I would go to India, and paint the first sample of a design, in each size. They would lay out the cotton and cut it to size for me on a big flat table, and I would mark it out with the pattern. I would give them the colors to match, and the master dyer would disappear into a little fallen-down shed in the corner of the open courtyard, mix up some dyes in an old open saucepan over a fire, and then bring me a pot and a brush. Astoundingly, the color was always exactly right each time. I would paint the face of each duvet cover, the borders on the flat sheets, and the pillowcases. Then I would go back to America, and some time later I would get made-up duvet sets in the patterns I had done. Trained artisans were able to repeat, over and over, the hand-done feeling, right down to the brushstrokes.

These days, we’ve moved on, and  the patterns are now printed with silkscreens, one for each color. For bedding, we use a 200-count cotton percale. For table linens and shower curtains, we print on a lightweight cotton canvas. The colors are wash-fast, but it is best to wash in cold water (better for the environment, as well) and to avoid bleach.

COLOR PALETTE

color wheelEverything I design is built around my core color palette. I have developed this over the years, and while it fluctuates with the time and seasons—some years I’m into pinks, some into greens, sometimes I like more intensity and other times I go for softer hues—it remains true to its center.

My yellows are warm, closer to apricot and marigold. My blues shade towards periwinkle. My greens are either lime or teal but NEVER Kelly Green. Mustard, navy, olive and beige are not in my repertoire—mud colors for muddy interiors—they’re easy to find elsewhere. >>>more about color palette
